Many parts of the Sanriku Coast were devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Ten years later, the region has made great strides towards revitalization and is home to stunning natural wonders, exciting foodie areas and poignant museums. Join this tour from Sendai to Kesennuma to explore the past and future of the Sanriku Coast.

Highlights

Zuihoden

Dedicated as the mausoleum for one of the most powerful lords of the Edo Period, Date Masamune, Zuihoden Temple is first accessed from the sweeping stone stairs lined with grand cedar trees. Featuring the unique design of the Momoyama Period, the main building displays colorful and complex woodwork.

The Rias Ark Museum

The Rias Ark Museum is an important local property that aims to introduce the southern Sanriku Coastal region through its two permanent exhibitions. The main exhibition is dedicated to interpreting and displaying the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami through photographs and damaged articles, aiming to give visitors a poignant approach to the disaster whilst also considering the future. The second exhibition focuses on regional and historical folk materials, customs and food.

Matsushima Short Hike on Fukuura Island

The over 200 small islands that surround Matsushima are known for their great inspiration to the 17-century haiku master Matsuo Basho, as well as being designated as one of Japan’s three most scenic views. Take a stroll across the attractive red bridge to one of these islands, Fukuura, and explore its botanical wonderscape through a short hike around the island, dotted with lookout points over the surrounding islands.
