Igloo Festival

Yunishigawa Onsen in Nikko

  • Located in Tochigi/Honshu

  • 3.5 hours from Tokyo by bus

Yunishigawa is a well-known hot spring town deep in the mountains in a remote valley. The town is famous for being the place that the samurai Taira fled to after being defeated in battle by Minamoto in the 12th century.

During winter, this riverside village holds a Kamakura (Japanese igloo) festival. The Japanese government has designated the illuminated igloos as one of the most beautiful night views in Japan.

Great View Along the River

By day we will explore this riverside wonderland and its numerous igloos and other snowy creations. After dark, the village and river are beautifully illuminated.

Heike-no-Sato

Step back in time at the Heike-no-Sato open-air museum, where you can see traditional thatched roofed houses and learn about the Taira clan’s way of life and quirky rules designed to keep the village from being discovered.

Stars on the snow

A walk along the Sawaguchi river is the best way to enjoy this unique illumination. Locals line the riverbed with hundreds of small Kamakura huts. Take a stroll around the candlelit river or enjoy the view from a bridge that looks over Sawaguchi.

Local Minshuku

Stay in a quaint Minshuku (Japanese style hotel), located a short walk to the Kamakura snow festival. The Minshuku has its own natural hot spring and delicious local dishes and homemade cooking.
